• Art l

This course will provide students with a meaningful experience with both depth and breadth of knowledge in the arts so that students may apply their newly gained understanding to the appreciation and creation of art in its diverse forms.

The course will acquire concepts, comprehension, and skills in the arts disciplines rather than using artistic activities to fulfill non-artistic course objectives.

This course will also provide opportunities for students to participate in all aspects of the artistic process, including creation. Presenting, producing, responding, critiquing, and connecting. They will have the opportunity to discuss artistic ideas with other students, summarize their work, as well as mastery of creative practices, skills, and artistic literacies.

These measures could include discipline-appropriate creative projects, collaborative projects, written exams, research, and written projects.

Art l will give students basic knowledge of the techniques and application of skills through experimentation in 2D and 3D areas of art. The course will introduce the student to the language of art; build an art vocabulary, develop basic design skills and view the works of select master artists; and give hands-on experience in many different mediums.

Students will learn and apply the Elements of Art and Principles of Design to produce creative art projects that reflect their understanding of these concepts.

Emphasis is placed on creative expression, craftsmanship, art vocabulary, and critiques, with an introduction to some art history and cross-cultural art studies.

    Ceramics

This course is a technical and aesthetic exploration of 3-dimensional design in clay and includes techniques in hand building, pinch, coil, and slab, together with glazing. During the second semester, advanced techniques in clay sculpture, hand-building, and decoration will be introduced. Course work will also include beginning wheel throwing and learning to center the clay. The products created are designed to build artistic confidence and may serve as functional items or fine works of art.

Students will become acquainted with historical culturally diverse examples of ceramic art and view work by contemporary artists as they develop their ceramic works of art. Students will learn and use appropriate ceramics terminology.
